I had the radiator replaced and the mechanic then discovered cracked head gaskets and a few other things so I was wondering how much (average) I will be charged for them to fit a re-conditioned engine and if after that anything else would need doing?

More than the car is worth. If you put out 2 grand for a new engine, you'll still have a dozen other things on that car that are worn out and ready to quit. You'll be spending money on it forever.

If your are looking for "easy" you have to stay D series - cheap and easy and little power If your going through the trouble of swapping engines you should make it worth your while. Do an H2B swap and enjoy the new found torque for daily driving as well as the hp for grassroots racing. A Japanese spec H22 will put out about 215hp or so and cost 1600...thats retail of course. Compare that with the retail value of a B18C1 and its 170hp for 1800-2000. For less money you can have MORE power. They can both use the same transmission (B series) the H just needs an adapter kit which costs about $750. So add the costs together and for $350 more than the B18C1 you get 45 more hp....if your on a budget you can pick up a 200hp F20B motor for $850...still more power and less than HALF the cost of a B18C1...youll need the adapter so 1600 vs 1800-2000....but 30 more hp and much more torque over the smaller 1.8L B18C1 You can go slower with smaller motors but if your gonna do it just grab a cheap big block motor and be done with it - the fastest street all motor rod shifted Honda is an H23 powered hatch making 326whp and running 10.8@127mph....thats street weight with full glass not a race car. No B series street hatch has ever done that. His next motor is aiming for 350+whp and low 10s if not high 9's all motor. Don't waste your time with the B blocks...the H/F series are cheaper and have more power potential.

provided the head did not crack, all your looking at is a valve job. $900-1200 should include the following; new timing belt, water pump, thermostat, spark plugs gaskets and seals. the radiator broke because of the pressure from the blown head gasket. call around and get prices from reliable mechanics.
good luck

A new engine - a fortune. A rebuilt, not so bad but enuff. As it will be a just a block minus all the accessories(alt, starter, ignition system, fuel system, and the like,,,the labor is gonna be a fair chunk of change. But I am thinking that all you have is a cracked head, not the entire block.

For this model I suggest you get a B15E engine which is economical. B16A engines are great and with power but these are usually preferred by racers. Get one with low mileage (between 30,000 to 50,000). It usually goes for USD800 to USD1,500 depending on the condition. That does not include transplant. Better yet check out your local junk or engine shops. They have one for your car. Good luck and hope I helped a little.

Another engine would run 250-$400 from Ebay. Which would work!

If you need the dealers names or ebay names, e-mail me, i'll let you know.

Buying an engine lets say your 1.6 liter would run $980 a 1.8 around $1050

A lot more than the car is worth. Get rid of it and buy something better built and more reliable.
