A substance becomes a magnet when the angular momentum vectors of the electrons in the material become aligned (all electrons orbiting in the same direction, basically).

If you saw a spinning object, it may appear to you to be spinning clockwise. However, if you were on the other side of the object, it would appear to be spinning counter-clockwise. This may seem like common sense, but it's a fundamental property of the universe. It's also the reason that magnets have two poles. A magnetic monopole seems to be impossible (and indeed has never been found).
