Why do we hurt each other emotionally and put people down below their means?

I want your suggestions on how we as individuals can take steps to treat people we encounter on a daily basis with more respect.

I would say to accept people for who they are and not what we perceive them to be. Understand that every human is different but yet we are the same, meaning we are all human. Keep in mind that people will have differing views than yours, but to accept that view with respect, just as the other person should respect yours.

I totally understand your concern and relate to what you are asking. I do not know how to answer it because I am very empathetic and compassionate and respect people at a soul level so it hurts me to see the way people hurt one another too and it pains me that those who do are so damaged and damaging in their behavior. I have become quite the recluse in many ways to protect my own sensitive heart from the damage that wails about. I find that in other cultures and societies the humanity for one another is more loving and kind. As for how to treat others with more respect, it would help to carry the awareness that we are all one and all connected, and that the faces that people wear, and the status of job or fame, etc. is just a facade. If one genuinely respects oneself then they can't help but have that spill over...but many people are wounded and fear-based and this countries ways feed into that.

In our society, we can give more people respect by trusting each other and being more carring. If someone thinks senitively about other people, that person is being more cautious about giving respect. People who are careful of what they say, show how they want to respect other people. People who are like this, have the intelligence to respect others enough.

There are people who have medical complications, and usually have to deal with insults and being made fun of. Those insults come from cold-hearted people, who don't even think of respect. Just because one person has a medical complication, makes a cold-hearted person be rude. Although some people only have minor/small medical complications, but medical complications do trigger being made fun of. This is because certain people, can't accept how some other people are different. Some people like to make fun of others who appear physically or mentally different, from them. Rude people who make fun of others, need to learn this is something they just can do. It is disrespect and rudeness, and harms other people. There being more support groups, can teach more people this. In the world we are going to have people making fun of others no matter what, and unfortunetly we need to deal with it somehow.

Rudeness puts respect at harm, and ironically some people don't think how important respect is. Everyone needs respect. Yes we might be rude to one certain person at one time just because we are mad at that person, but we need to learn how to deal with others. This is a lesson we all have to learn in life, and it may be difficult.

My point is, there are issues that cause disrespect. This is life, and if everyone can deal with it ina mature manor, we should be ok.

It is not possible to institute respect, any more than it is to mandate morality.
People hurt each other emotionally to gain control of them.
As individuals we need to learn how to respect ourselves, in doing that we will automatically show respect for others.

Sometimes we judge people, then act on the one judgement.

To understand people would help with the judging. If you knew someone story, maybe you would understand. Yet judging is based on one act. We don't know the person's whole story. A story of a person usually explains the state of a person in the present.

I think you are confusing respect with dignity....like most other people do. Respect is earned, I do not give out respect easily. Strangers are not respected. However, I do treat everyone with dignity, there is a difference.

refrain from jokes that could be considered as offensive to anyone, say their names to them, understand that they are people too and that they have feelings, never raise your voice to anyone in anger nor frustration. i had a friend that liked to bow to people he met he was a walking example of respect.

a shorter answer would be "Chivalry"
