In most jurisdictions your offense would be a felony, not only because of the dollar amount involved but because an
entry was made to a business with the preconceived intent to commit a crime within. This constitutes the added offense of
burglary in the first degree. If they charged you with a midemeanor as a part of a plea negotiation, you should already have an idea of what sentence you would be looking at. If not, courts generally tend to be lenient with first offenders
(assuming this is your first offense) but you cant always be sure. It depends on the judge, since if there is a plea bargain, it binds the prosecutor but not the court.

I don't know how you got away with only misdemeanor charges. Assuming this is your first offense you might get probation. Personally I think you should serve at least 30 days in county jail.
That might teach you a lesson, if not you have a long hard life ahead of you if your lucky. Or you might get caught stealing from the wrong person, and end up shot. Try to use your brain in the future.

$1700 dollars is NOT a misdemeanor. That is a felony. Do you really feel you should not go to jail? Do you really think the judge should just shake his finger at you and say "now now you've been bad don't do that again"? What you did was beyond stupid. I hope you learned your lesson. With that dollar amount you may be looking at prison time. I hope so. I detest thieves and that's what you are.

You're guilty of retail theft (misdemeanor in the 1st degree) and if it had of been over $2,000, you would have been charged with a felony. You're probably looking at some hefty fines and probation if this is your first offense.

Dumbass!
That is a felony in most states and it will serve you right to go to jail.
I'll bet your buddies stick up for you too. They will probably say it was your idea.
I hope you've learned your lesson.
But I doubt it.
