An MSNBC.com investigation by Bill Dedman, posted Thursday, documented that of 144 journalists identified as having "made political contributions from 2004 through the start of the 2008 campaign," the "newsroom checkbooks leaned to the left: 125 journalists [87 percent] gave to Democrats and liberal causes. Only 17 gave to Republicans," a 7-to-1 tilt. (Two contributed to both parties.)
But while most of those found by Dedman work in local markets, for opinion-oriented publications or hold non-news coverage positions such as music reviewer or copy editor, several are mainstream media journalists. Amongst those listed by Dedman for donating to Democratic party committees, the Kerry campaign or anti-Bush left-wing groups: a correspondent and a producer for CBS's Sunday Morning, a CNN reporter now with NPR, NPR's newscaster during All Things Considered as well as another NPR correspondent, a correspondent for NBC's Dateline, a Senior Editor at Time magazine, the "ethics" columnist

An MSNBC investigation? The last time I checked into MSNBC investigation is was about a guy getting out jail for burning up his family. IN these studies you have to be very careful about sample selection bias.
But, fortunately for you, the media is just a mouthpiece for the administration - or at least was until Katrina, then a few got balls. But consider the show Bush put on in the last press conference. He said that 'maybe a couple people in my administration were involved in a leak'. The press did not correct him, did not address the lie, did not continue. They simply rolled over like they do ever day and let this lying sack of s**t get his way. I don't blame them too much, because if they do start asking too many questions the get refused access, kicked off the blame and barred from the press conference. The media routinely lie the American people so that they can maintain access to administration sources and therein maintain their lavish careers (for the most part).
The studies that show voting behavior or donation behavior of journalists is irrelevant. It is content that is the issue. Just like if I said that all the owners of the media were republican conservatives.

If I wanted to be snide about it, I would say that most journalists are democratic because they're better educated and more intelligent than average.
Seriously, though, 144 journalists is a pretty small sample and it's open to bias. I would be careful about extrapolating from this sample to the tens of thousands of journalists who are working in the U.S.
Even if it could be shown that the majority of journalists were Democrats, this hardly has any bearing on their coverage of events. The news media in the U.S. (and Canada, where I live) is overwhelmingly owned by a few large corporations, most of which seem to pressure the media outlets they own to have either a right-leaning bias or a corporate bias. Most of the news media I read from North America are pretty right-leaning; liberal bias in the media is a myth as far as I'm concerned. Remember, if you're an ordinary journalist slogging it out in the trenches of your community, it's not your opinions as a journalist that count, it's your boss's opinions.
By the way, to the chap who cited Anne Coulter's "Godless": you must be joking. She's not a serious commentator. She's an entertainer, the literary equivalent of a "shock jock' like Howard Stern.

Because, journalist tend to be smarter then your average person. The higher up you go in college, the more liberals you'll find. The majority of scientist are liberals and most of them are not religious.
See liberals care about the truth, where as conservatives only care about THEIR opinion and emotions. That's why nothing gets accomplish. You have one side bringing rational ideas to the table(libs), then you have another group bringing crazy arguments and truth diversion(Cons) to the table.

I'm not particularly alarmed by this. There are certain facts of life you just have to learn to live with. One is that people that pick a certain vocation have similar interest. So its not surprising that people that gravitate toward journalism have the world view that most people are too stupid to make there own decisions and need elitist liberals in power to make all the important life decisions for them.

I don't know why they do it, but I know I haven't seen anyone in the media for years who could be called a true journalist without editorial leanings. They are in the entertainment industry.

Makes perfect sense, see the more you actually do some inquiry and not settle for the information passed alng by Government and it's institutions the more likely you are to Be Liberal since most liberals seek out an array of knowledge to make decisions and draw opinions, goes to show the more informed you really are the more likely you are to be liberal is all

Because most of them are in the business of lying and spreading left wing propaganda.
Lol at the poster above me and at mediamatters. Mediamatters is funded by billionaire, ultra-leftest, and anti-American George Soros and it's run by an illiberal homosexual that's smears anyone that speaks out against his anti-family agenda.

Did you run the same survey for editorial staff or even more importantly for executives of the companies that own these outlets, ie the people who really decide what goes into the news - the people who decided that the majority of American media would endorse Bush in 2000?

I can only think of one thing. Birth defects. The same defective gene that makes them want to be writers makes them want to be liberals...it's like men's figure skating/being a male hair stylist and being gay.
