like if you took a male and female nearly extinct mammal and cloned them would the clones then be able to reproduce?

Yes, you can. but cloning an animal means creating an exact copy. The clone's DNA would be exactly the same. The whole point of reproduction is to mix you and your mate's genes together to create new genes. These genes could create an immunity to a certain disease. If you simply cloned, then a virus made to destroy one animal, would destroy the entire species. If all the clones were killed, there'd be no point in cloning.

OK, they can, but they can as well keep on cloning the species. But some genetic defects keep increasing.

It is better to preserve the species which is becoming extinct than try cloning etc. But yes, your idea is good.

Yes. The clone is like the mammal's twin, only born sometime later.

yeah they can reproduce as they have there 23pairs of chromosomes n have their sex cells (gametes)..
for the case of panda..we cnt bcz its against science ethics n bioethics etc...
jst too bad for panda..nice question though ;)
