I keep meaning to ask my useless Pediatrician about these clear crystal looking things in my daughter's diaper. I see them a lot and usually just with a wet diaper (no poo). They are really tiny, kind of like clear sand. Has anyone seen this and/or know what it is?

I use Huggies and change her at least every hour. I had thought that was enough and her diapers are never that wet. I'm pretty obsessed with changing her. Whatever, the case...I'm glad to know what it is. Thanks Everyone!

Let me guess, you have the huggies with mickey and minnie mouse on them???

I have used huggies on my son since birth and have been a very satisfied customer. I also bought the design with the lion king characters on the diaper. Two weeks ago I went to the store and the only huggies in stock were the mickey and minnie mouse design. I didn't think much of it and just grabbed a pack...HA! Every single diaper he has used has had the absorbent gel leak out onto his skin. (and he is getting ready to potty train and tells me every time he goes potty, so he is changed almost immediately!)

I actually complained to Huggies and they sent some coupons for free diapers.

**also...the dehydration crystals that you can sometimes see in a child's diaper are not clear, they are sort of an orange/red color.

It the chemical that they put into the diaper to absorb wetness, it turns into a gel. This chemical should stay in the diaper and not come in contact with your baby's skin. I don't know whether there is anything in the chemical that could hurt a baby or not but I think I would not want anything I don't know what it is,against my baby's bottom.

I personally wouldn't use disposable diapers. When my two were little I always use cloth diapers on them. There was no chance of a chemical I didn't know anything about, getting next to my baby's skin.

Cloth diapers are cheaper than disposables to begin with and they aren't all that much trouble to launder. It took maybe two loads a week extra to do the diapers above and beyond what was normally laundered.

Cloth diapers breathe better than disposables therefore they cause less if any diaper rashes.

When you wash the don't ever use any detergent that has any additives or say that there are no chemicals added because they are too strong to be next to your baby.

Don't ever use bleach because it weakens the fibers and makes the cloth diapers wear out sooner than they should.

Don't ever use fabric softener either, it coats the fibers and keeps them from being as absorbent as they should, even the dryer sheets do the same thing.

Drying cloth diapers in a dryer is okay but if you can put them in the sun it is much better, the sun works like a natural bleach and softener. You don't have to hang them on a line, for my diapers I use a drying rack on the back porch.

Yes, I said my diapers. I'm incontinent due to a medical condition and wear diapers 24 / 7 and I have worn both disposables and cloth to find out which is best and believe me, cloth is best. A baby can't tell you how uncomfortable one is over the other but I can. Take convenience out of the picture and cloth wins hands down.

You should forget convenience anyway when it comes to disposable diapers, after all, you should be thinking of your baby's comfort and health first and your convenience last.

Good luck.

I have noticed crystals and gel in the diapers. What are these materials, and are they harmful? The crystals and gel are forms of a superabsorbent material. Superabsorbent diapers offer significant benefits: drawing wetness away from baby's skin and helping to keep baby's skin healthy. In HUGGIES® diapers, superabsorbent material is mixed with the diaper padding. This material turns liquid into a gel, helping to prevent leakage. Occasionally, you may see small beads of gel on the diaper or on the baby, but the gel is nontoxic and will not harm the baby. Superabsorbent material, also known as polyacrylate absorbents, are a family of polymers that have extraordinary absorbency. The safety of superabsorbent material has been proven in over 450 consumer safety tests studying every which way a person could come in contact with it--through skin contact, or perhaps a baby's eating it out of normal curiosity. Each study has consistently demonstrated the safety of this material.

LOL, that is part of the diaper. When certain brands get wet only wet not soiled you see it. THe diaper is layered with padding that turns into little balls when it gets wet sometimes if there is a tear in the inside some of it will fall out and it looks like little beads. It won't hurt her unless she is ingesting handfuls of it. Walmart and Huggies used to do that on me all the time when mine were infants.

The clear tiny crystal are part of the "absorbant gel" that lies just below the outer lining of the diaper. If you're seeing them every time you're changing the diaper, and they concern you, then you either need to:

A: Change to a different brand of diaper.
B: Change your child more frequently.

Honestly though, they're are of little concern, they're more just a byproduct of quite a bit of urinating. Once the gel reaches it's maximum absorbancy it starts to seep through the lining. It can be pretty messy to clean up. :)

I think it's part of the diaper lining. How wet are her diapers? I know when my daughter has a really wet diaper (her first change in the morning), she usually has something like this in it. I just assumed it was from the diaper itself, the lining sticking to her.

Thats what absorbs the urin when they pee(with the cotten like stuff in it). I hate it too. Just do more diaper changes, i noticed if i left her in a diaper too long they will push out of the lining.

Huggies does this alot, but they all do. Just dont leave them in the diaper too long. It's good for a few pee sessions but not alot, lol. I change after the 2nd time she goes or when it feels heavy, smushy.

Add:
I used Huggies, Luvs, Pampers, White Cloud and they all do it if you leave them in it too long. Im now on Huggies since they strech to fit my girls ever growing butt, lol

It is the absorbecy balls inside the diaper. It means that your child is urinating so much that it is creating a small hole inside there that is allowing the crystalls to leak out. No problem. It won't hurt her. If it bothers you try a different diaper, i liked the huggies supreme for my kids.

what kind of diapers are you using? a store brand or cheaper diaper? it sounds like the stuff in the diaper that absorbs moisture and turns into gel (beads up). maybe you need a better diaper or changing more often?? its normal to see that once in a while but not sure why you're seeing it all the time..

Yes, you are letting the diaper get too wet and that will make them come out. Change the diaper more often or switch brands!
