I am a music major looking to do a backup as a teacher if things don't work out. Do you know anything about being able to teach after college and what sort of requirements are there?

You need professional developement classes leading to certification with your music courses. Talk to your advisor. DO not let them talk you into anything that means getting certified after university that requires more classes. In US -No Child Left Behind - means schools must hire "highly qualified teachers" that means certified in their field of education. It is difficult for schools to justify hiring uncertified teachers who work and progress towards certification as in past. It can be done but usually in areas where teacher shortages exist. There are also programs such as Texas TMS (Tims) program where you teacher the first year on a probationary certificate with mentor support for less pay and get certified. This must be done through the university. Advantage to this is no student teachng and you get paid.
