Volunteer to catch during practice and on the sides when the pitchers are doing their bull pen work. Don't bug him, but let him know that you are willing to do the "dirty" work to help the team. At the same time, you will be getting experience behind the plate.

I play catcher and a great tip is get all your own gear that way the coach won't have to worry about you not having any. Also go to the batting cages and practice in front of the slower and faster pitching machines to help your reflexes..they need to be good and fast!!!

If you want practice ... theres lots of things you can do. simple throwing against a wall and working on glove-hand transfers, use a pitch back and work on footwork, have someone throw at you both to catch and block. i mean, there is a lot of ways to do it.
in terms of talking to your coach, be up front. say you've been working on it, and see if he can give a shot in practice to show what you've got and maybe he'll stick you in a game.
