Hi,
I've recently completed a home inspection. The furnace in the home was not working properly. I'm wondering what could be wrong with it, and how much it would cost to fix such a problem(s)????

Here are the details:

*The thermostat was turned to the auto position, the temp raised, but the burner would NOT ignite.
*The pilot light was out at the time. (There were several burnt matches on the bottom of the furnace, so maybe the pilot does not work automatically, and only manually.

Any idea with what's wrong and the co$t to fix would be helpful!!

Thanks!

-George

It sounds like there could be air in the line and who ever tried to light it didn't wait long enough for the air to clear. try lighting it again. If the flame ignites but just will not stay lit after waiting for the thermocouple to heat up then you need a new thermocouple and they are not that expensive. Any way the pilot light has to be burning for the furnace to work. If it is a fairly new furnace then any repairs should be minimal.

Maybe the gas pilot valve was off for the summer.
or some other reason. Anyhow, make sure the gas control valve is in the ON or PILOT position.

The normal turn on procedure is to light the pilot with the valve in the PILOT position. If the pilot lights, allow several minutes for the heat sensor to activate, and then turn the valve to the ON position. If the furnace doesn't work at that point, you should consider calling a serviceman.

Furnaces with gas pilots are rare these days so the furnace you have there is probably 30 years old. You should consider replacement if there is a problem. Cost: $2000-3000.

I would call in a heating contractor to check it out. Or light the pilot and try it again.

$3500 on the replacement 900 square feet.
have them replace it or do not buy
When I sold my house last year, AC compressor went. I paid the $1000 rather than dick around with the buyer.
