I'm very curious as to what you heard about having a dog or stuffed animals has anything to do with masturbating. If someone has told you to use them, they're wrong.
It's best if you read up on the art of masturbating. You can find lots of info online as well as books.
As far as what to use...your own hands will work, but you can also use the shower head (while you're taking a shower of course), a vibrator works great too.
