The only ankle issues I've had are sprains, (and I've had quite a few). If it's a minor sprain, you will have a little swelling and discomfort for about a week. If it's more severe, your ankle is already very swollen and it will become very bruised in the next day or two. If this is the case you need to go to the ER to get x-rays to determine a possible fracture and/or ligament damage. Given the level of pain you described, I doubt this is the case.

The only other cause that I can think of is tendinitis, (inflamed tendon). The only way to get rid of this is rest, some ice, and naproxen, (anti inflammatory, brand name Alleve).

It would help to know whether the onset of pain has been increasing gradually or if a particular action set this whole thing off.

I'm not a doctor, I've just had a lot of ankle issues. I hope this helps.

From your vague description it's most likely a sprain

Mine was injured and a doctor can tell you what to do. Ankles are slow to heal and require that you stay off of it a while.

I have hadf that happen alot of times. It is probably just a muscle cramp. But if you exercise it maybe it will quit hurting.

Stay off of it for a day or two, and if it hasn't gotten any better (or gotten worse) see a doctor.

Comfrey tea is good for that. If you can't find the tea, get the herb and make a tea of it.
