my parents aren't so keen on the idea... They say we have a few too many pets (not quite true.. my brother has a hermit crab, we have a family dog and turtle, and I have a kitten)... I would be getting it in August from a small store near our beach house, fairly cheap with a basic set up... I would appreciate any pros and cons so I could work on my persuasion, and any tips on lizard care would be great!

Thanks in advance!

Edit: Sorry, I almost forgot... The lizards are small, about 3-4 inches long, im not sure what type... they range in color from green to a grayish, and i saw them climbing the plastic walls of theyre containers... theyre tails are long, a better part of their body length... i asked the lady at the counter, and she said that they eat things like mealworms, bug, and bananas (and other fruits)... i have a turtle, so i am aware of the lighting costs...

Thanks everyone for answering, and thanks in advance for any more info!

It all really depends on what type of lizard you are planning on getting.
I, do not, however ever recommend an iguana as a first time reptile. They get VERY VERY large, and if your parents already feel they are "full" when it comes to animals, a 6 foot lizard isn't going to go over very well.
The typical turn offs on most herps is the fact that most of them require live food. Mostly crickets and worms. They require very specific lighting and humidity as well. The "basic" setup could end up costing you anywhere from 50 bucks to 200 bucks (not including the price of the actual animal!).

The pros of a lizard would be it's a great way to get rid of bugs in the house. They require no extra money. In fact the lizards are basically a decoration for your room. They don't make a mess and they are so cute! There really are no cons. Get the cute little lizard!

Good lizard for your first time would be an iguana. I would go for the older ones at the pet store. They are fairly easy to care for and can be a good family pet. I suggest handling it a lot and letting your family do so as well. Maybe even leash walk it a few times.

They can be like dogs if treated right, I have seldom heard people be disappointed by my iguanas.

Care depends on what species you are thinking about! A good place to start is to read the forums care lists and Q & A's on www.reptilerooms.com and learn all you can about the many common species. Good luck!
