If I go option 2 with the external USB way - won't I need to download a driver onto the HD?

I think option 1 might be safer!

As far as mounting, your dont have to screw it into place if thats what your talking about. However if its ticking then its going bad, and thats if you can still get the data off of it. You need an IDE cable, and an ATX 4-pin plug from your computer. If your have a cd/dvd drive, you may need to unplug it depending on how many IDE connectors and controllers you have. you may also have to see if your hard drive is set up as the master hard drive, or slave.

best way I know of is to get a hard drive case and mount the hard drive in it. this way you can connect it to your computer via the usb hub and transfer files that way
