My description is: any verbal attack where the purpose is to disrespect or demean another person.

This is the most prevalent type of abuse. So many are seriously damaged by verbal abuse heaped on them by parents, siblings, and school-mates.

The lasting effects are manifest thru abnormal, very aggressive behaviour in later years.

Bad stuff...

I don't like being insulted to the point of being made such a mockery of that I am no longer laughing but crying. Ridicule by your loved one is awful You will know it when you are a part of it. I was emotionally abused by my husband for years. He used to say he'd break me down and build me back up and then I went back to school and left him. He left himself 5 years ago. Sad thing is a lot of people were not surprised. I wonder who emotional abused him to bring him to be that way? I sure hope I broke the cycle. We had two kids of our own.

So many possibilities, First one to come to mind is the willful manipulation of a person by means of emotional taunt or threat. Another would the the purposeful use of discourtesy as a means to inflict injury or separate and ostracize one from community.

degrading or belittling remarks

withholding affection, regard, love, approval

disrespectful remarks and/or name calling

put-downs

actions which show a lack of respect or regard for someone who cares about you

In short, being on the receiving end of actions, comments, remarks, statements that make you feel small.

Doing all or some of the above repeatedly over an extended period of time (months, years).

Hope that gives you some insight.

for my section, emotional newborn abuse is whilst a discern abuses a newborn verbally. Eg. to tell a newborn that he or she is valueless, and would in no way do something suitable. whilst a discern calls the newborn shameful names and insults the newborn. wish this helps.

If you feel uncomfortable with what someone says or treats you, that is a clue, basic commoon sense, and not having your needs met is a clue as well.
