I actually got a grant a couple of years ago to start a restraunt in a revitalization district. It can be tough (A LOT of research) but there are definitely a lot of good programs out there...especially for women and minorities. I'm applying now for a grant to develop raw land. Finding a grant is only 50% of the battle...writing an effective proposal is key too.

I used a couple of the grant ebooks out there and they were actually not bad. You could probably find some programs yourself online but i just dropped the $20 for one of these books and then spent my time applying for EVERYTHING that I thought I might qualify for....that's the key. Apply like mad.

I think the two sites I used were:
www.officialgovernmentgrants.com
www.mygovernmentgrants.com

Either one is good.

Hope this helps!

There are essentially only 3 sources for grants.

Federal grants are called Small Business Innovation Research grants. These are given primarily for some new innovation. You can find out what's available at:
http://www.sbirworld.com
There is also info on this site about how to apply.

Some cities offer grants to small businesses if they will locate in the downtown area, for the purposes of building up downtown traffic. Check with City Hall.

Finally, private foundations offer grants. You can get a list of most US Foundations and private grant sources at http://www.foundations.org/grantmakers.html.
