My friend's 12-yr. old daughter got into a car accident 2 weeks ago & broke her arm. I just noticed that she was in the bathroom for a very long time & came out & somehow took the cast off her arm because she is emo & likes pain. Should we take her back to the hospital to get a new cast on her arm? This is the 3rd time she did this within the 2 weeks, & she did it 2 time before earlier in the week when she was at camp.

Try to get it back on and warn her not to take it off. If you don't have protection around a broken bone the growth will not be equal and eventually you will have a bent bone. When my brother broke his bone he didn't go to the doctor right away and after a few days when they did an x-ray scan the bone was growing away from the main bone part and there was a spike and it hurts him when he moves his hand. I can see the lump on the skin the spike poke on his skin. They have to cut it off and attach rods to let it grow equally. Metal rods are alternative to casts but more expensive.

Let her keep the cast off. When her arm heals the wrong way and she realizes that she is dumb then she will learn. Thats the only way to teach her because unless you sedate her 24-7 or follow her around everywhere she will get that cast off.

I think you two are going to have to take her back in. You don't want her arm permanently damaged. I wonder if they can safely put the cast on tighter so she can't remove it?

Good luck and have your friend talk to the ER doc about the child's emotional problems.

Yes. I don't think it'll be healthy for her to take off a cast that soon (plus getting it wet for long hours like that?), so to the doctors it is!

And, tell her not to take it off again...

It's actually a serious situation.

yes. you have to take her back to the hospital and get another cast on. if you don't, her arm will just get worse and worse and eventually, well, let's just say very bad things will happen. make sure she doesn't take it off again
