They cant seem to be able to offer an actual answer to why, so I wondered. It doesnt really make sense to me, because someone who just got a new checking account at a different bank and has starter checks could be much more trustworthy than someone who has had their account for ages and doesnt anymore....

Because your name and address isn't pre-printed on them, and they are more subject to fraud than traditional pre-printed checks, because you can write any name and address down to match your ID...whether it belongs to the account holder or not.

When you order checks privately, they verifiy the information with your lending institution.

too much risk the checking acct could have been closed out after the user got the checks or the checks being counterfeit. I'm sure a lot of bad checks have been written using starter checks of this objection would have never been brought up by stores

You can order any starting number you want so order some checks starting at 6500 or something and no more problem.
The thought is if you have written thousand of checks the account is likely to be good.
I just opened a new account and they automatically sent me checks starting at 1001 but I have only written one check on it and that was to myself so no problem.

The reason is due to the inability to verify the information on the checks. The only information is whatever *you* have hand written on the check.

Starter checks are easily counterfeited and stores don't want to assume that liability.
