I know I see Venus in the West, but I also see a bright light in the sky in the South (is it Jupiter?). I live in Chicago.

Also yesterday as I headed inside, I caught a glimpse of a bright light in the north-east. Was this something or did I just see an airplane for a moment?

The bright object in the south is Jupiter.

The bright object in the north-east was likely a plane or satellite, since there aren't a lot of very bright stars in that part of the sky (Deneb and Altair are the brightest, but they aren't as bright as Jupiter).

Jupiter is indeed visible in the south this month. And it is second in brightness to Venus.

That sounds like Jupiter. It isn't quite as bright as Venus, but is still clearly visible and you are looking in the right direction.

Stargazing (or rather planet-gazing) is fun, isn't it?.
