Ok, so I drive along at 70 mph and for 5 seconds...smooth ride, then, for 5 seconds the car shudders, then smooth, then shudder, (repeat untill end of journey).

Don't think it's the tyres, as it would shudder all the time.

Any thoughts?

If more info required I am happy to enter a dialogue, as it is worrying me.

Thanks.

My car is a Rover 400 1.6i, R Reg (10 years old?), with a Honda engine (they made 2 apparently, the other with a Rover engine)

Has 131,000 on the clock and I travel about 25-30,000 miles in it each year.

I bet you need to clean your MAF.

The car has done a lot of miles. You may try changing the engine mounting rubbers a thing that is usually overlooked by all garages. They become soft with oil on them and as such are useless. It may also be wheel bearing.

Sounds like a fuel problem. Do you drive with a tank less than one third full,as this sucks up twice as much gunge in the fuel and causes blockage to the fuel filter. Assuming it`s petrol, the plugs may be the cause or HT leads faulty.

I don't know, but one time my vw shuttered badly and it took many times in the shop for them to see that all but one of the bolts holding the engine in place were gone. Just another idea to check out.
drive fast- no shudder!

When was the last time the car was serviced? Sound like there is a potential problem with the fuel/ignition system.

That happened to me once.
Took the car to the garage.
Result, my wheels needed balancing.
If you take your car to Kwik Fit if you live in the UK, they will sort it out for you, it doesn't cost much.

chances are that you may have a clogged fuel filter. If that doesnt pan out you may have a transmission problem.

You need to get your wheels balanced.
If it is also pulling to the left or right you may need to get them aligned as well..
