In addition to Bill Bryson, try reading The Sex Lives of Cannibals and Getting Stoned with the Savages by J Maarten Troost. They are both about living and traveling in the Pacific. Also, try Hokkaido Highway Blues by Will Ferguson. One year Ferguson, who was an English teacher in Japan, hitchhiked from the southern tip of Japan to the northern tip, following the blooming of the cherry blossoms.

Oh, get anything by Bill Bryson. He's an enormously engaging writer, and very funny in places. He's done books on the U.K., Australia, Europe, and even hiking the Appalachian Trail. And some of the little-known facts he unearths are very interesting. It's wild that you can be laughing so hard and learning new things simultaneously.

A Year in Provence (technically about moving to/living in a foreign country)

Bill Bryson's novels are exactly what you're looking for then.
He offers hilarious commentary on social customs, general travel, &c. The man has amazing eye for detail and perceptiveness to rival Batman's. Great writer too.

I recommend all of them.
