It kind of depends on the situation. I don't really think wealth or beauty effects it. It is the personality that makes people like or dislike you. If you are snotty or arrogent then more people would want you to fail, if you are nice and thoughtful people would less likely want that of you. If you are snotty or arrogant beauty or wealth may contribute to it, but I don't think really in general it makes that much of a difference.

Depends on the person you are speaking of. Some who know you and are close to you would most likely want to see you succeed. Some people however, especially if they dont know you, are more likely to spark envy. Envy is inspired by greed, and thus they would perhaps want to see you fail. As you put it the wealthier you become, the more the greed of others is shown, and thus the more people would want to see you fail.

Well, schadenfreude is always possible, and especially in the case of the too privileged? I agree, though, with the lady above--JW--i'd be more apt to smile if an arrogant narcissist falls on his face as compared with a decent sort, no matter the "income" level.

I only have one word for you that could serve as a (very short) answer to this question: jealousy.
People can't help being jealous of others (especially if that person is wealthy and good looking) and when people get jealous of someone they tend to wish that person the worst.
That's it!
