work backwards
read 2x+3=8 like this
2 (times what) + 3 =8
work the problem backwards (i.e. 2 + 3= 5, 5-3 =2)
well subtract the 3 from the 8... that leaves 5
so now the problem will read 2 times what equals 5
-- you have probably learned before, that you do the opposite to find the answer...
-- essentially you switch the problem so it's backwards
5 divided by 2 or (5/2)which is the same as 2 and 1/2

Solve,
2x + 3 = 8
Subtract both sides by 3,
2x + 3 - (3) = 8 - (3)
2x = 5
Divide both sides by 2,
2x/2 = 5/2
x = 2.5

Another method is to cover up the 2x with your finger and ask what number should be underneath your finger.
The answer to this is 5
Thus:-
2x = 5
x = 2.5

minus 3 from both sides
then it becomes 2x=5
then divide by 2 on both sides
x=5/2 -or-2/1/2

You need to get x (the unknown) by itself on one side of the equation.
So
2x = 8-3
so
2x=5
so
x = 5/2
Remember you can do any arithmetic operation you like to achieve this, so long as you do it to *both* sides of the equation.
