I want to stay at a hotel near the red line of the Cleveland RTA so I can shop and eat in a nice place. The next day I would take the train downtown to see an Indians game. Is Brook Park a nice place, looks like the station is out in a not so safe place.

Brookpark is not a bad or unsafe place to stay. Its just not very interesting. Mostly people stay at Brookpark hotels simply because it is near the airport or they don't really know any better.

There are some very interesting places to eat, shop, and explore along rapid stops like Ohio City University Circle/Little Italy and of course downtown on the Red Line, and Shaker Square on the Blue/Green Lines, but unfortunetly there aren't any hotels in these neighborhoods near the rapid station.

Your best bet would be to stay downtown. All downtown hotels are within walking distance from the Rapid station at Tower City Center. And downtown hotels don't have to be expensive. Of course there's the Ritz and Marriot, but the Hyatt, Radisson, Holiday Inn Express or Hampton Inn are pretty reasonably priced and in fantastic locations. I honestly don't think downtown Cleveland are any more to stay at because they are "downtown", even though they are within walking distance to Tower City Center, Jacob's Field, the Rock Hall and great dining/nightlife/entertainment activity on W.6th and E.4th Streets.

Staying downtown is really ideal, because you can get there on the Red Line, walk to Jacobs Field, walk to nice restaurants, enjoy the revitalization and downtown character, and maybe shop at Tower City Center. Keep in mind that the shopping is really in the suburbs like Beachwood or Westlake.

Should you want to venture out of downtown for a compact neighborhood to explore for some good cheap food on the Rapid I would strongly recommend Ohio City. You can visit the West Side Market, Great Lakes Brewing Company and more just steps from the Red Line station one stop over from downtown. RTA has some great guides available for you in order to explore the city on its transit system available here: http://www.gcrta.org/opt/

If you want to stay near the red line, you can try the Alcazar, it is the oldest hotel in Cleveland, it is located in Cleveland Hts. The red line is right down the hill, at University Circle, even though it may look shabby, University Circle, has a lot of professionals so there are rarely any problems with crime. The Alcazar is located in the Cedar Fairmount district in Cleveland Hts. it has some nice places to eat.
But if you really want to stay in a nice place with a lot of places to shop why not stay at Tower City? There is a Ritz Carlton inside Tower City, which in case you didn't know is a shopping mall. You would be right down town and not only would you be near the red line but also the Blue and Green line. You could walk to Jacobs Field if you'd like.
I would just like to note, that even though a lot of Rapid stations don't look that safe, RTA and the city of Cleveland do a pretty good job and patrolling these areas. They don't want to lose ridership especially since they are building that new silver line, so they are gonna make sure all their lines are safe and secure. Good luck and have fun.

Pebbles stole my answer! Haha jk, I do have to agree with her though. I live in Lakewood and take the RTA to work almost everyday, and have used the bus many times as well.

The Days Inn is on Clifton Blvd. (a nicer area with a 24hr diner very close by if the game goes late!) and is right on the route for the busses (#55s) that can take you downtown in just 10-15 minutes. You could take the RTA too, but that would involve a 5 minute bus ride or about a 15 minute walk. I think the cost for an all day pass is $3.50.

Have fun!

There's a Days Inn in Lakewood/Cleveland border that the busline will take you directly to public square/Tower City.. Which is on the redline.. Lakewood is nice it has lots of shopping, anitque stores and an good mix of people there's also many bars and hot spots as well as places to dine.. There's also a redline stop On W117th and W.98th that aren't too bad and close by bus/walking. It's also cheaper than staying in Cleveland.. good luck..
