You have to intall everything that has to do with Symatic Protection, and the security center of norton!
1) Go to Start
2) Set Program Access and Default
3) Change or Remove Programs
4) Find everything that has to do with Symantic or Norton, and uninstall it!

You are exactly correct in your assumption.
Go to Start Run type in regedit.
Next you go through each area and physically remove anything the has anything to do with Norton, or Symantic.
If you are unsure don't jack with it. Contact Symantec Support and have them walk you through it.
You see depending on what all you have, you could have as many as 6 or 7 programs downloaded including Liveupdate. It is not for the faint of heart.

Get a registry cleaner, try CCleaner at http://www.ccleaner.com/

Cleaner is a freeware system optimization and privacy tool. It removes unused files from your system - allowing Windows to run faster and freeing up valuable hard disk space. It also cleans traces of your online activities such as your Internet history. But the best part is that it's fast!

I agree download Crap Cleaner and run it regularly, it will remove all that junk that stays on your computer when you throw something in the recycle bin...it's the best!
