America's first Muslim congressman has provoked outrage by apparently comparing President George W Bush to Adolf Hitler and hinting that he might have been responsible for the September 11 attacks.

Addressing a gathering of atheists in his home state of Minnesota, Keith Ellison, a Democrat, compared the 9/11 atrocities to the destruction of the Reichstag, the German parliament, in 1933. This was probably burned down by the Nazis in order to justify Hitler's later seizure of emergency powers.

"It's almost like the Reichstag fire, kind of reminds me of that," Mr Ellison said. "After the Reichstag was burned, they blamed the Communists for it, and it put the leader [Hitler] of that country in a position where he could basically have authority to do whatever he wanted."

Your summary does not match the actual quote. The comparison is the Reichstag to 9/11. Not directly Bush to Hitler.

That being said, either comparison has been made by lots of other people who are not Muslims.

So, attributing it to the "first Muslim in Congress" is inflammatory beyond any rational purpose. All it does is serve to stir up hatred against Muslims.

Would you have reacted differently if the headline had attribute the comparison to "a Democrat in Congress" or just to "a member of Congress"?

an identical motives Libs think of people who do not help Obama are racist. There rather at the instant are not any good motives, it rather is purely the way Libs haven't any valid motives, so as that they attempt to shout the different social gathering down. The solutions listed here are a acceptable occasion. they don't provide any motives, purely some short sentences there'll be the predictable ones, faulty as they're. comparing Hitler's meant Christianity with Bush, so as that they must be an identical! Hitler hated Christianity just about as much as he hated Judaism. actually Hitler gave greater appreciate to Islam. Jan Brewer became a Nazi through fact she does not % her state over-run with illegals who will call for centers and entitlements. yet that doesn't make sense the two, through fact the Nazi's could have been checking any and all of us and jailing them for the slightest offenses.

Everyone has his or her right to free speech STILL. Doesn't bother me in the least. I am no Bush supporter and I and many many others in the country have our own suspicions based on accumulating evidence, but I would hope he had proof to back up his assertion, however, seeing that he is a representative of the American people.

But, here's his exact quote:
"It's almost like the Reichstag fire, kind of reminds me of that," Mr Ellison said. "After the Reichstag was burned, they blamed the Communists for it, and it put the leader [Hitler] of that country in a position where he could basically have authority to do whatever he wanted."

In the beginning Hitler was respected and beloved by the people of Germany. This is a free country and he has the right to say such a thing. Not everyone in this country believes the cookie cutter version of the Islamo fascists did it because they hate us for our freedom. If you view the whole picture and why they needed the war in Iraq and how 9-11 was instrumental in that war happening what he says makes sense to some people.

That statement should be accepted whether the person was a Muslim, Christian or Jew... whether you like it or not. I would hope our political system isn't beyond it. A lot of nutty things were happening during McCarthyism era.. and McCarthyism was pure suspicion and speculation also.

I think it's important for our Government to police itself from time to time.. let the voters decide.

Ony in America would he be free to voice these thoughts. Just so he knows, he'd be dead if he stood up in German parliament and bombarded Hitler for being evil.

That he is a Muslim isn't surprising. What gets me is that he knows it is not true but says it. Oh well that is politics. In my mind this guy is a moron and a hypocrit.

there are plenty of non Muslims who say the same thing, why are they not getting the media attention? the guy is American, and being Muslim has nothing to do with his political beliefs. Not in this country.
