If you plead "no contest" then you are not challenging the prosecutions allegations, and you are not asserting any affirmative defenses. Basically, you are telling the court that it can accept everything the prosecution says and you aren't going to argue it. This results in a conviction (almost every time), just as if you had plead guilty.

However, unlike a guilty plea, a no contest plea cannot be used as an admission in later proceedings, civil or criminal. Because you made no admission.

A not guilty plea requires the prosecution to prove its case, and allows you to assert affirmative defense at trial.

Neither of those pleas establishes that the person is guilty. That happens at the trial, if the jury determines someone is guilty, or if the matter is resolved pre-trial with a finding of guilty. But the guilty finding comes out of the proceeding, not from a guilty plea.

Entering a "Nolo" plea basically say that you will not contest the charge, but you are also not pleading guilty. It is sort of like saying you're guilty without actually 'saying' your guilty.

it is a way of pleading guilty without fault. the affect is a guilty plea on your record.
There are only two reason to do it. one for some big shots looks better to the media.
2. there are benefits from it if you plan to be sued civially for the same actions they can't use it against you. while they can use a guilty plea.

No contest means that you did it but with an explanation.
But if you know you'll get off then you will still have to pay a fine because you didn't plead not guilty.

I had a ticket because I didn't have my proof with me, went to court with the proof and pleaded no contest and they had me talk to the prosecutor and she said I should have pled not guity and I wouldn't have to pay a fine.
It was just $20 court costs though.

no contest means, 'I did it but I don't want to go to trial.'

in this case the judge will decide your fate instead of a jury.
