That's fraudulent. ~
Banks don't allow money to be withdrawn until the check has cleared. This one never would have. Phony story!

Oh, the bank will get it back, don't worry about that.

Your "friend" has stolen enough money to be charged with a felony, put on trial and get some serious jail time.

The owner of the account can also sue and press charges.

You might want to find better friends to hang out with - or at least avoid this one until after he/she has been arrested. They might just take you too - as an accomplice.

a simple lawsuit

basically the bank and actual owner of the account in which your friends wrote the checks, can sue your friend. Essentially, your friend could lose double what he took, because he is responsible for paying the bank and the individual he stole the money from.

The Bank has insurance for this and your friend will go to prison for a felony. After he/she gets out the bank will go after him to repay the money which he/she will have to.

If they can prove it was your friend he will end up in court, then in jail and with an order to repay the full amount, fees and a large fine.

Put your friend in jail so he won't do it again, then as a condition of his release, he has to make payments to the bank.
