You are talking about genetically altered seeds. These genetically altered seeds have disease and insect resistant traits that allow farmers to achieve higher crop yields. While I don't totally agree with what they are doing, a company is entitled to get a return on their investment since there are significant research and development costs associated with the development of these products. There is nothing to prevent farmers from using conventional crop seeds to plant their fields.

It is up to the governments to ban this technology. One significant concern is that pollen from these genetically altered seeds will spread to fields that are not genetically altered, rendering the 2nd generation crops sterile. If this is in fact the case, then I believe government action throughout the world will be to ban their use. Since the FDA contributed money to the research and development of these products, they stand to gain a 5% royality on the sale of terminator seeds.

Edit:

To those of you who mocked his question, shame on you. While I find it amusing to read the sinister plot behind every business, it is still a legimate question.

Well people don't have to buy these seeds.

Fort instance, they can buy Monsanto's hybrid corn seed, harvest the crop and re-plant next next year....although they will no longer be growing the hybrid as divergence will begin to take place. Over the years their crop will become more and more divergent and lose any hybrid vigor they once had.

To combat this, a farmer could develop two inbred lines, and cross them himself to develop his hybrid seeds. He could then plant those seeds and enjoy the benefits of hybrid vigor.

....or he could just buy his seed from Monsanto and save himself the trouble.

I don't like Monsanto either. Buy seeds from another source.
Monsanto markets under the brand name Seminis.
