Not really monsoon, as in the tropical monsoon. Local TV stations say something like 3 (?) or mroe consecutive days of over 50% (?) humidity marks the start of the monsoon season.

Really, we're likely to get 50% of the year's rain in 4 or 5 big storms - an inch or two in 20 minutes is not unknown. Maybe 2-4 inches in total.

I once lived in South Florida & they REALLY get rain. But here in the desert, the first big storm is awesome. I like to run outside & get soaked.

During monsoon season, the heat will increase over 5-10 days, before the storm hits & then the temperature will drop 10-20F in a few hours & it'll start all over again. This can keep going through August, with a few isolated storms until about OCtboer. Then not much more rain until February.

Also - monsoon storms normally start with a Haboob - a dust storm that is really spectacular, but a pain to drive in (like drivin in thick fog). The dust storm rolls across the valley - a thousand foot high wall of opaque dust, across a crystal clear valley.

The real name is from a arabic langauge. But the term is for when the direction of air flow changes. Which here in Arizona this time of year will bring more Moisture from the Gulf of Mexico into Arizona causing a great deal of our yearly rain fall. And yes it really does come from the Gulf of Mexico not the Gulf of California. We just seem to be having the Monsoonal flow passing to our eastern border lately though so without the Humidy staying over 50% for more then three days in a row. the official Monsoon has not yet started.

A 'monsoon' in Arizona, is basically just a thunderstorm in any other part of the country.

The American monsoon can be categorized by 3 consecutive days of 55 degree dew-points.

It last from early July to mid September.
