If you are talking about the Wankel (not the old aircraft engines) the great advantage is that the moving parts don't have to change direction thousands of times a minute like pistons do. The main disadvantage is the seals which are large and traveling at high speed around the walls. It took several years in production models to get materials and designs that survived for a car's operating life.

Advantages - They have amazing horsepower to weight ratio. They run very smooth, and are very long lasting. Even in the 70s when it was remarkable for a piston engine to last 100,000 miles, rotary engines often ran for over 300,000.

Disadvantages - Because of the way the apex seal works, they burn more oil than a piston engine.

a two rotor 1.3L rotary engine from an rx8 produces over 230 hp. revs up to almost 9000 rpms and weights significantly less than a 4 piston engine. as mentioned before, it also has much fewer moving parts (3 i think). the only problem with them are their seals and the fact that not too many shops work on them

No, the rotary engine produces less horsepower and alot less torque than your standard 4 cylinder engine and the same if not less gas mileage.....

No advantage having a rotary engine

first thing is they have relatively no red line, spin as fast as you can burn the fuel, thus high rpm more hp,not much torque though,so they never really had a lot of pull, also the main seals tended to go south quite often, which tended to land a lot of them in the bone yard, which in turn the experimental aircraft guys snatched them up as fast as they could, super hp to weight ratio, perfect marrage,I hear mazda redesigned that engine for there rx8 might have to take a look, bet it hauls butt

Yes no valves and much fewer parts ability to rev very high.Less weight. Big disadvantages oil consumption high fuel usage and internal sealing.
