The biggest reason is that the conglomerates that own the fossil fuel industry have spent untold billions to keep cheaper energy from becoming mainstream. All the advertisements about what they are doing to help the environment is all bull$hit. They just put on the environmental face while strangling any other source that could compete with or eradicate the use of fossil fuels. The second reason is we haven't found a source that will produce efficient energy reliably. Wind, solar, wave, geothermal and nuclear all have significant drawbacks.
