Ok heres the deal.

Monday I was at college, some one at home left the garage open - some one stole my 250$ haro BMX.

Tuesday I noticed it was gone and asked everyone in the house the last time they saw it.

Wenesday I see some kid I know riding something that looks like my bike. I can swear on a stack of bibles its mine, I even have some proof it is mine (on it). I chased them down on my motorbike to see if it was mine, they disappeared in some woods.

I thought I spooked them off, guess not. I saw them drive past my house yesterday. Took off again, this time they were on the road and I drove past them. I was trying to figure out who was driving my bike, and well I was right. Really didn't get a good look at the bike, but im pretty sure its mine.

If I know its mine and I can confirm its mine, how can I get it back? Should I get it myself or call the cops - what will they do? If I get it myself can I get in trouble or sued?

call the cops and tell them what happened and they will go talk to the kids that you believe stole it . They might just scare them enough to bring it back . good luck .

follow them , find out where they live, and steal it back. threaten him if hes young and thinks hes a punk. hes my story.:: We had our sons bike stolen one day. We say it near the rail road tracks and told Derrick to go get it, When he was getting it, another kid already took it.. Turns out, some kids here do this every day, and the neighbor kid was the middle man, these punks are 5th graders. We talked to that middle man and got the info off of him as to where it was and stuff, drove there, knocked on the door and the kid has trash for parents that denied that the kid stole the bike. Hubby just went into the back yard and got it back, put it into the van and we kinda befriended the middleman kid by giving him our extra bike parts and frames and sometimes advice.
You probably can't get sued, but if its not yours you should get it back to him. Just go steal it back, and showing them the gun collection helps too.

you don't want to do anything criminal on your own -- that means taking it back could get you in trouble if its not yours. you can talk to the police and they can give you your best options. your bike should have a serial number on it that would be written on the paperwork that came with it. other than that the police usually recommend ingraving your social security number or other positive identification number on it. hindsight is 20/20 -- learn from your mistakes and remember to keep your paperwork and engrave a number on your next bike if you didn't this time.

Call your local police telling them what you know they'll probably tell you the next time you see it stop whoever is riding it and call them. Once they get there prove it's yours and let the rider provide a receipt or proof it's his. I wouldn't waste any time though it's probably been stripped.

File a report with the police and tell them you have seen the bike and can identify it. Let them take it from there.
