I am starting to write a book, but I don't have anything solid yet. I want to know what other people like to read. I'm not sure about the plot yet, but I do know I want to have a story with sacrifice, twists, plot twists, and an ending nobody thought would happen. My question is this: What should my book be based around? Does anybody have any good ideas they would like to share with me? Anything will help. Even if its just throwing an idea out in the open, I will accept it. I just need a little bit more of an idea and also what people like to read most. Thanks for all your help in advance.

write a book you want to read. You can not decide to on plot and genre based on others and expect to feel excited enough to finish it.

Ask yourself what you read, what you like, what sort of story can interest you, what story can you write (I like literary fiction, but realistically I know I could never write an ENTIRE book in that style).

You've also got to know something about the subject (or do research). For example, if you want to write a medical mystery, you will have a hard time without a med degree.

Also, please don't think people just spit out novels. My manuscript was 4 years of brainstorming. 4 years of research. 4 years of fleshing out the characters and plot in my head. Writers do not just sit down and begin writing. It is actually a very difficult process. And even more difficult, the revision process where you virtually rewrite entire scenes, add and delete characters, revise current characters. That isn't even counting line edits.

and if you want to know what people read, I suggest looking at the NY Times bestseller list. Yahoo answer is full of teens. Unless you want to write YA, it won't be that helpful.

People like to read stories about mundane people who are whisked away into mystical or extraordinary situations, it gives them something to identify with. They also like to read about someone who's life is not going well due to abuse, divorce, death, lost jobs, bad friends, weird social situations, etc. who are then given a way to overcome it, get away from it, escape. Audiences want to hear about people who are just like them but find a way to move beyond the negative or boring lives of other people. Look at The Chronicles of Narnia: three children on their own in a big, scary house and a stifling environment, and low and behold they run into a big closet that leads to a magical land where they are not the helpless ones but the ones who hold the power to rescue everyone. The Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter, The Pirates of the Caribbean... all the most successful books/movies start out like this. Good luck, I admire your courage and your ambition... I hope this helps even just the littlest bit.

I like some of the themes in the movie "The Secret" or the books "Conversation with God" on youtube or "The Tipping Point" by Malcom Gladwell on how to change the world with a rumor and six degrees of separation. A lot of Quantum Physics in novels now and the latest in science theory.

Sounds exciting, however it is an thought that is been performed earlier than so you'll be able to must fairly rock it. :) @bookish, that wasn't fairly very reasonable to inform the asker. You would be discouraging from exploring the inventive competencies. No one that begins writing produces Shakespeare best at the first attempt to the asker is courageous and clever for asking reviews from humans who would possibly not simply supply pats at the again. And only a tab, ever heard of Eragon? Teen creator. :I

If you don't know what you are writing about, how do you know you should be writing a book? It sounds to me like you have nothing and you are here asking someone to give you a plot. I'm sorry but authors use their plots for things they write themselves. We call it "intellectual property". If you cannot come up with a plot, a beginning, a middle and an ending, you should rethink your decision to write. If I gave you MY ideas, it would be MY book not yours. Pax - C
