I prefer the two directed by Wes Craven, A Nightmare On Elm Street and Wes Craven's New Nightmare. The sequels all ranged in quality, with Nightmare On Elm Street 2: Freddy's Revenge or Freddy's Dead:The Final Nightmare being my least favorite.

A Nightmare on Elm Street 1 is the best.
I have to say I didn't really like Nightmare 5.

My favorite was 'Dream Warriors' with a nice title song by Dokken...LOL! These Elm St. Kids obtained special powers in their dreams to take on Freddy! The kid in the wheelchair was not only able to walk but, a great swordsman as well. This one began telling us a little about Freddy's mom (the nun) as well and left it still a mystery. I do love the first one, because Freddy didn't have all those one-liners/catch phrases and therefore was more terrifying than most the other films. Freddy's Revenge (the 2nd cheesy one) had that boy who couldn't act out of a paper bag, but no way would I replace him, because as we saw the beginings of Freddy's one-liner personality it was played well against the new kid. Also, since Freddy was a child predator/molestor, then I suspect he would've been as he was when he was spitting out those one-liners left and right because that was his way of being 'young' that all molestors try to be in order to bait their prey (the children). As serious as he was in the first one, if that Freddy uponed you in a dark alley, you'd run fast the other way. If the more kiddie friendly Freddy were there, you might not run away so quick, as he would have baited you by pretending to be on your level. That's how preditors work. The Dream Child was not great but it really tried to get Freddy back to the dark side. The movies after that were just all fluff and no substance. Not even subtle substance. Something made Freddy the way he is. Something gave him the abilities to haunt these kids in their dreams. They would never take us that deep into his psychy. All we ended up with, when all was said and done, was a long list of cute one-liners to make us forget the real evil happening... imho :-)

The original aside, I think the best is part four The Dream Master. Its still freaky as hell and has that Freddy humor that became a staple of the franchise. The worst six, Freddy's Dead. And New Nightmare which totally discounted the whole series! Hope to see a new one someday!

This is one of those series where I don't have a favorite. However, the first one got to me so bad I left in the middle. Walking home in the dark afterwards didn't bother me as much as the movie did. Actually I guess the 1st one is my favourite since it was unique for its genre at the time. I was able to watch all the others.

My favourite, as almost everybody else here said, was the original. But I liked the 2nd and 3rd ones as well, although I always thought Wes Craven directed them all. From the 4th one onwards they get a bit s**t.

A tie between the unique and Wes Craven's New Nightmare. I cherished the version of Freddy that replaced into extra extreme and frightening, extra "in the shadows". the two certainly one of those flicks Had that sense. the former being extra delusion, mutually as the latter being extra in genuine existence/delusion (Metaphysical horror). i hit upon them the two to be the terrific. My least renowned would be Freddy's Revenge, in basic terms reason I felt it ignored what the 1st known, and positioned Freddy in the genuine international, the place human beings would desire to make certain him mutually as they have been unsleeping.

The 1st one was my favourite. I remember it scaring the crap out of me when I first watched it. I liked them all up until the 4th one after that they really went downhill and too far fetched.
