I have been a server and a bartender and know the importance of tipping. There are many that stiff the server totally. However, I think many people think they are tipping well when they are basically insulting the server.
I had a customer that had a $115 check, told me how great I was, told my manager how great I was, and left me a $5 tip. I'm sure they THOUGHT they were tipping well.
I also had a customer at the bar who would tip the same $1 if he bought a beer for himself or a round of 10 cocktails.
Although tipping is certainly not required, sadly many are just not aware of what is usual and customary.
BTW, I tip a minimum of 15% up to 25% for great service.

Yes, I have worked for tips so I realize how important it is. But I don't have a problem not tipping if the service is bad

yes I am....my ex used to get mad at me because she said I tipped to much....I told her she should have to serve herself and then she would know why I tipped so much....now that I am single I still tip like 20% even for average service and sometimes I tip more....If it is happy hour or I use a coupon I still tip closer to what the cost would have been.....
