I teach Gawain and the Iliad; both are very important and exemplary pieces of literature that should be read. If you want to take the easy way out and read JUST a summary, then you will miss out on something special-- with both works. If you read it and are still confused, then I am happy to provide some insight. For starters, SGGN explores the nature of perfection and the possibility of achieving it... it also explores the dichotomy of the sacred and the profane, of what is worldly and spiritual, and the value of each. It uses many symbols to convey these themes. The Iliad is, yes, the greatest "war" epic of all time, about how the great Achilles led the defeat of the previously untouchable city of Troy. However, deeper than that, it is one of the greatest LOVE stories ever written-- the bond between Achilles and Patroclous (his partner in war, best friend, soul mate, perhaps even lover?? "Patroclous brought the bread/Achilles brought the meat"). It shows how deep the friendship between men can be, and the physical strength that can come from deep emotional pain. It is beautiful reading; I hope you will give it a chance.

That's a lot of reading! I have read -- and taught Sir Gawain and the Green Knight. It's a poem 600 years old. You can find a summary here.

The illiad is actually much older and tells the story of Troy.
