Mikelo is correct, the question asked is which rear end, 7 1/4 or 8 1/4. Most common back then. IF the question was what ratio does this rear end have , then Cactijoe is correct.

If its a slant six (straight six) its most likely a 7 1/4" rear end. If its a V8 its either a 8 1/4 or 8 3/4" rear-end. The 8 3/4" rear-end doesn't have a differential cover, but the center sections acts as the cover. The 8 1/4" rear end does have the diff cover. Hope this helps.

FYI -The "rear end" is the gear ratio of the ring and pinion gears. The gear ratio is always stamped into the edge of the ring gear and if you have a cover that you can remove you can rotate the wheels until the gear ratio is visable on the ring gear.
If you have one of those rear ends that pulls out of the differential housing from the front side then you will have to unbolt the whole differential from the axle housing assembly and pull it out to read the numbers stamped into the edge of the ring gear.

There are many different gear ratios so don't expect to see any particular more common numbers like 4:10 or 3:73 as it could be anything in-between.

Good Luck!

Take the inspection cover off and it should be stamped on the crown and visible on the pinion.
otherwise count the teeth on each and print the chart on the link below:
