With what we know we are safe. We are tracking all known asteroids and comets of decent mass and so far we don't see an impact for over 200 years.
That does not say never because of the objects we have not discovered yet, or the asteroids in the asteroid field who could collide with each other and send one our way.
We are lucky that Jupiter acts like a cosmic vaccuum cleaner and its gravity tends to destroy and collect most of the objects that would have hit us.
As far will we feel pain it depends were you are at impact.
If crushed, you will feel pain for a second before moving on.
If burned you will feel pain for hours or days.
If in a tidal wave, you will feel pain for several seconds while drowning.
If in a winter state with the sky darkened by the debris, your next few days and weeks will be very cold. And within months you will feel the death of hunger.
As for me, I hope to be at ground zero when it happens.
I saw the same show. It was very interesting.

Earth has a really good defense shield from asteroids, But one could still hit us. You think, we have 8 Planets to protect us, plus an asteroid belt, and do not forget about all the moons out there. Something can hit them before us. Oh, and about God killing us off with an asteroid, you may want to read a bible. For the feeling pain part. That depends, the people near the impact zone, no they would not. Everyone else might, Just depends on the size of the asteroid and the impact it would have with Earth.

Science has proven that massive asteroids have hit the earth in the past and caused severe changes in weather, atmosphere, etc. Could one hit us in 2012? Sure could. One could hit tomorrow for all we know.
Will we feel any pain? Depends on where the asteroid hits and where you are at. Some of us will be vaporized immediately, others will linger as the skies darken and snow flies, ash descends, crops shrivel up and die, water becomes undrinkable. It is not a nice picture.

Honestly? No.
The year 2012 will become our next Y2k. Lots of people will try to make themselves feel important by making all kinds of claim. Especially claims involving God will be the worst.
Of course, it they said a comet, then it is not an asteroid.
The Earth has been hit quite a few times by comets in recent history (the "big one" being out in Siberia about a hundred years ago). They have a tendency to explode while still in the atmosphere.
Of course, if God really decided to destroy Earth (with whatever means He chose) then who are we to stop him?
Do you really want to believe in a god that only seeks to kill people?

Actually the asteriod will come in 2010 and will come in from the southern hemisphere. At the time that it will be close enough to see with our telescopes, the area of the planet that will be facing it will be the south pacific during the day. It wont be that big but it will come in so fast and close we wont know it's coming until it's upon us. The relative aproach speed will seem greater because it will come in against the rotation of the earth. On it's approach, it will pass mainly over the islands of the south pacific first. If we are lucky, it might be visible from Hawaii just above the southern horizon. It will then pass just north of Papua New Guinea, some parts of Borneo, then south of the Philippines. It will then pass directly over Brunei and Malasia, then over the southern parts of Vietnam and Cambodia. It will pass directly overhead of Bangkok, Tailand, through India, directly over Quetta, Pakistan and Kandahar, Afghanistan. It will then pass directly over Tehran, Iran, then over Turkey, Greece, Albania, and then crash into Rome, Italy.

No asteroid is going to hit Earth in 2012. I can't believe the history channel would even say such a thing!

I've read that the world won't end but we'll go through some rough times. The sun might go close to the center of the Milky Way and there is a BLACK HOLE! So yeah. But we don't know until the day is here. I was scared but like a month ago I stopped because back when the Mayans were around they didn't even have plastic! Plus, Thats only the end of THEIR calendar. So yeah. Yodda yodda yodda. So in cunclusion the world won't end

believe in something, believe in anything, when in an unexpected, {jesus said,i will come like a tief,in the very deep and soundness of your sleeps...}happening occured,we always caught in the unmindfull state isn't it(8)?remeber the levy show maker that hit a planet, a bigger planet in our solar system (jupeter)?remember TUNGASKA INCEDENT 1908 did we knew that time that a (comet,? or alien space craft,?or
an unknown energy of ? sort, or a tested weapons of destuction hits us )?no i think no. but understand it there is another kind of time. the universal time table chart., time will will tell the FUTURE WE ARE consuming now is running out
fast going to an era of ------what we called "THE NEXT GENERATIONS OF MAN AFTER THE FIRST" 1ST".SOME COMETs aren't comets at all. some FOUR are planets. what are the 4 ORBIT FREE MOVING PLANETS ? that are going to pass us by soon? I've asked that once in the yahoo Q&A.

its possible. if they calculated that if it were a tiny bit more off course it would miss us, then it might not. its hard to determine the effect of the other planet's gravity on long term things like this. also, we would only feel pain until we are:
a) drowned by the torrential waves
b) suffocated by the huge amounts of dirt thrown into the air
or c) killed off in the end by cold temperatures, and a lack of vitamin D (the sun helps us make vitamin d)
so if you dont wanna feel pain, move to the coast, or just always keep a gun in your dress or =)
by the way, i dont think that an asteroid will hit, because my race hasnt planned that yet. we were thinking more along the lines of an "accident" in nuclear testing where they accidentally create a miniature sun, kinda like in your earthling film "spiderman 2"
we will be waiting

Thanks, Eri.
There is no reason to point to 2012 in particular as "GGU-Year" (God Gets Us Year!) A deep-space object could bonk our silly little planet in just about any year. In fact in the present state of space observation, the truth is that we are most likely to suffer serious damage from some object we don't even see coming. The first thing we will know about it will be the bright flash, followed by the concussion, and then later by the dust cloud.
I just hope I am home with my doggie when it hits.
