Last night I defraged my NTSF hard drive and then my FAT32 hard drive which is about 9 GBs. Well...after defraging my FAT32 the computer would boot up but freeze at the start up screen. Nothing would work. I had to use a recovery disc and completely restore my PC.

Why did this happen, and why aren't there any warning windows that pop up to keep people from (like me) from ruining there hard drive?

The most likely reason is a bad sector or corrupt file on your system drive, which was removed by the program. Since you said you have both a NTFS and a FAT32 drive, I am guessing you have a version of XP.

Xp will often run the scan disk program before defragging the drive. This is what can remove a vital piece of Windows, if it is in a bad sector.

I know of no way of protecting yourself, other than doing regular back-ups of your system to a back-up file or disk. This would have allowed you to restore to the last back-up instead of the the original software.

You should try to run this scan: http://support.wdc.com/download/index.asp?cxml=n&pid=999&swid=3 Is the program most places will use to test a hard drive. With the drive being 9gbs I think you have beat the horse to death if you used the computer a lot. If this test comes up with errors then you might want to think of a new hard drive in your future to have files and data secure on the computer.
