It can be done in various ways:
a) Convert everything to denominator of 4 Thus 10 = 40/4
4 3/4 = 16/4 + 3/4 = 19/4

10-4 3/4 = 40/4 - 19/4 = 21/4 = 5 1/4

b) Subtract integers first 10 -4 3/4 = (10-4) +-3/4 = 6-3/4 = 5 1/4

Answer = 5 1/4 or 21/4

First, change the mixed number into a fraction. Then take common denominator and solve.

10 - 4 3/4
= 10 - (4*4 + 3) / 4
= (10*4 - 19) / 4
= (40 - 19) / 4
= 21/4

Make all have common numerator and convert mixed to fraction:

10 = 40/4
4-3/4 = 16/4 + 3/4 = 19/4
40/4 - 19/4 = 21/4

To convert a mixed fraction such as x y/z use (zx+y)/z
So 4 3/4 = (4*4+3)/4 = 19/4
Now 10 = 40/4,
So 10 - 4 3/4 = 40/4 - 19/4 = 21/4 = 5 1/4

All of the people who answered this before me are correct, but another way to look at it is think that the number 10 is 9 and 4/4, you see a number divided by itself is 1 so 9 4/4- 4 3/4 = 5 1/4, but this works out because one of the numbers is a whole. Another trick, make them into decimals first, in this case that is also easy 3/4 = 0.75 so look at this problem as 10.00-4.75 = 5.25 .25 is 1/4 so it's 5 1/4.
