How can I connect my desktop to my laptop in order to put files from one onto the other? Any tips on the process will help. We need to get rid of our desktop, but I need to get some things off of it before we do.

just plug an ethernet cable between the two (theyd both needs network cards).

Depends how much you need to copy, but if you dont know much about computers, if I were you Id just get one of those USB sticks and copy it onto there. Or burn it all to CD or DVD

Assuming your desktop has a USB port and is running Windows XP - the easiest way is to use a USB memory drive (a.k.a. a thumb drive).

If you really want to network them together you'll need to build a network with either Wireless (wifi) or Ethernet. It can be done, but not as easy as using a thumb drive.
