They are good on gas. I'm gonna mark this one, because I want a Beetle too. I'm 26 and about to be a first time buyer too. They are really cute.

I had a 1962 Beetle back in the day. Very sturdy little car, good on gas, could fit a lot into it, plus, with the book "How to Keep Your VW Alive & Running, A Guide For The Complete Idiot", I was able to fix several problems by myself - something that you can't do with today's computerized cars.

If you're concerned about fuel efficiency go for a honda or toyota hybrid. They're much more sylish than a VW beetle these days. Mini Coopers have good fuel efficency as well.

depends on what year. I don't like the older ones cuz you sit so far under the dash, in a wreck, your gonna get hurt bad Plus depending on how old, they had a problem with heat (they are air cooled) causing the fuel in the carb to vaporize and start engine fires. Plus, in cold weather, the heaters don't work well. In the newer ones, although a lot more expensive, heck yes, they make great cars.

they are good for a first car mainly because they dont have very much power including the turbo model but the dont get very good gas mileage if you have to drive up hill due to the fact you have to put the pedal to the metal to make it up the hill and they only get about 20 miles to the gallon anyways i would get a honda or toyota/scion for my first car. My first car was a 92 honda accord and it got 30mpg and i never had to do anything to it but change the oil

I would never drive in one. They're so small, what's going to happen to you if you get in an accident on the freeway going 65-70 mph? I would imagine you would get very, very hurt, if not worse.

They are inexpensive and gas-friendly, but as for safety...let's just say you wouldn't want to be hit by a larger car or truck in one...
