I believe it is a dog eat dog world, either you sink or swim. The welfare of my wife and children takes priorty above all else no matter what happens in this world.

Yes, it is wrong for you to perceive the world in that manner. It is the whole point of becoming civilized to support one another. In a dog eat dog world, you take what you need to survive.
In a civilized world, someone grows the food, others build the shelters, other make the colthes. While people are busy doing task required for everyday life, you contribute your share.
This ties us all together. Not only does the welfare of your wife and family matter, so does the welfare of your community. For you must keep your community strong to protect you from the dogs who wish to consume you.

Gee I hope if you would ever have a house fire that the Volunteer firefighters don't feel that way. it's a dog eat dog world you know and maybe they should think of there wife and kids too.

If I thought like you did, and saw that your life was in danger and that I would have to risk my own life to save yours, I probably wouldn't bother, as I have to look out for my own self. Would that be wrong of me? After all, it is a dog eat dog world, right?

And if everybody else believed and acted on your "ideology" ,this would be a world full of mayhem and violence as the "survival of the fittest " becomes the sole modus operandi.
