Basically, to try something which is usually out of the ordinary in amongst "society" to get a reaction from the general public or even for your own benefit. eg. Different haircut/style, clothing or attempting at a personality which is different from your own/usual self, usually acting as something which is radically different from the your "normal" self or the "norm" in amongst society and usually for some sort of effect.

Not sure what the book says but as a youth I used to walk all hunched up and with an exaggerated limp just to see people's reactions.
