Well, never talk on a phone 'in' the shower no matter what the weather is like, lol. But the reason for the shower one is because if lightning strikes close it can come up the water pipes, I've always heard. I guess with the phone it is the same thing..but then it wouldn't be safe using any electrical equipment indoors during a storm. You also aren't suppose to be near a window. I guess because lightning can travel through glass?

Of course this is true! All it takes is to have a line of any sort (or conductor of any sort) from the lightning strike to you and for you to be touching the 'ground' (a floor will usually do)
Insurance companies have half of their words in their policies covering different types of "fusion" (where your appliance fries for one reason or another including lightning and those $200 surge boards you buy for computers ... same purpose.
Good news though - you will not get a direct shock on a cordless phone. You will however get an awful noise that could damage your hearing.
So ... Grandma is not quite so silly.

It is possble to get shocked by any electrical appliance during a thunderstorm let me say it's HIGHLY unprobable so that means you can still use them

I guess it's POSSIBLE. I heard a story about some guy that was listening to his stereo, and the lightening bounced off his speakers into him! It's probably really really unlikely, but I guess it's possible.
