I have a 89 jeep cherokee and my tale lights dont work, how can I figure out where is the short or?

what could it be?
The break light do work, but when I'm driving they just go out.

sounds like you have a wire that has rubbed the coating off and is touching metal somewhere. If you are not familiar with electrical systems this is a job that will drive you crazy. Suck it up and take it to a specalist. I swear, Its worth it not to drive yourself insane.

bad ground run a wire from metal tail light box to frame
bad signal hazard switch replays it
bad connection to fuse block locate and reconnect
