On a scale of 1-10 (10 being the worst), how bad does getting a cavity drilled hurt. Any other encouragement or advice would be appreciated.
*I am getting one drilled tomorrow, and I am really scared of the dentist*

Also, does anyone know how long it should take? I don't want it so seem like forever.

About a 4.
I just had two done a few days ago and it wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. As an adult I am still terrified of the dentist and I was fine. Your dentist should give you Novocaine which should take away all the pain (he may even give you numbing gel to numb the pain of the Novocaine shot). The drilling doesn't hurt, it is just a strange sensation (you can tell he is drilling, but you cannot feel it). Then he will fill it, which shouldn't hurt either. Then he polishes and you are all done.
The only pain, in my case, came about a day later when I was sore from the shot and my filled teeth felt sensitive. The level 4 of pain comes from the shot and having to sit with my mouth open for a half hour, and also form the numb cheek I had for a few hours. Although I do have a low tolerance for pain so it may be less for you.
Fillings are very routine procedures and almost everyone has had one, so don't worry. It will only take a bit, and will be over before you know it. Good luck!

Make certain you get a shot of novocaine. And....make sure the dentist gives you plenty of time for it to take effect. (Don't fear the needle. The pain of drilling is so much worse than that stupid little needle.)
This would also depend on how deep the cavity is.

Just make sure that you get enough Novacaine, I think it's called (it's a shot that you get in your gums, appx. 20 minutes before drilling should start).. and it shouldn't hurt at all. Not one bit (so I'll give it a 1). But if it still does, ask for more, and give it time to take effect. Good luck, you'll be fine! **Don't Worry**

2 maybe, they give you some gas then a needle in the gums which you can't feel and you don't even see so you will never even know you had it. It is fine until later in the day when your mouth is still numb and you drink something and drool on your face, but that's the worst part.

Neh.. I'm twelve and I've had a bazillion cavaties...... lol not literally.. but it doesn't hurt that much, not at alll really, I just find it hard not to gag... when they do it.. I hate things being in my mouth..... X.X Oh well, but seriously, it doesn't hurt because they put novicane to numb your mouth. The only thing that does hurt, is when they first inject the novicane, There's a slight pinch feeling in your cheek, but it disappears immediately. ^^ Good luck!~

I have had many teeth drilled and after they give you Novocain, the pain level is a one. It does not hurt at all.
