Pride in workmanship comes from passion.

It is easy to see how a professional sports athlete has passion for their sport. I would guess MOST of the professional sports dudes would play without the pay or fame. There are those in sports who get paid abundantly well, have talent, but no passion. Usually, their workmanship suffors.

Now, with a task like being a janitor, the passion comes from an understanding, and pride of what they can do. Some find that they don't enjoy thier work, but since they have the talent they cringe when the see it being done wrong, or half-butted. This creates the passion that keeps them in the trade.

It seems the reason people don't take pride in their job is because they feel their job is beneath them, or they don't feel they're getting the respect they deserve, or the pay they deserve, or they're bored and the wish they were doing something else, or they don't think they will be rewarded for working harder so there is no incentive to do so. If these factors were eliminated, then you're more likely to have someone who is willing to put more effort into their work.

I think it's something that you learn early in life, from your parents, like other basic concepts.

I've had a wide variety of jobs over the years, from menial to highly skilled, and I ALWAYS took pride in what I did.

I've seen highly paid tradesmen who did not take pride in their work, so I would have to say that wages alone do not guarantee quality workmanship.

If I knew how to teach it, I'd be rich...

a little of both...i taught my sons to be proud from within.....not rely on it from others........and i also set an example personally.............i would say to them......"wow ! you must be really proud of yourself".............for a job well done , etc.........they are grown adults now and only depend on themselves for how they feel about anything......strokes are always nice..but in the end we cultivate any true and lasting pride within outselves...
