Cable modem plugs into wireless router.Desktop plugs into router. Laptop picks up internet wireless. Since both get internet OK, can I somehow network them and share files?

You can and you are almost there already.

You need to define the folders on each pc for network sharing so they can be seen by each other. Go to Windows Explorer (right click START, select explore). Right click the folder you want seen on the LAN by the other pc and follow the sharing prompts to do this. Do the same on the other pc and you are nearly done.

You can map drives to make this easier to find in the future. Go to Tools, Map a Network Drive in Windows explorer and you are done

You need a hub. Laptop ethernet cable to hub, desktop enthernet cable to hub and hub to Internet Modem. You'll also have to share your hard drives (password protected, of course) so you can "find" both computers on the network.

You must have a hub. Then use the Ethernet RJ-45 Cable to connect the computers to the hub. Good Luck,
